This is an actual call I just received at work (bearing in mind I’m not the receptionist, and someone has had to have CHOSEN to come to the engineering department):

Caller: “Hi, can I get the cell number for Woody Boyd please.”

Me: “Woody Boyd?”

Caller: “Yeah, Woody Boyd.  (now acting annoyed at me) He’s one of your outside salesmen.”

Me: “Um…. I have a Woody (last name that sounds nothing like Boyd).  Woody Boyd was a character on ‘Cheers.’”

Caller: “Yeah, that’s who I meant.”

(Since the guy obviously had no sense of humor, and didn’t even realize how funny his error was, I just gave him the number… at some point, he’ll repeat the exchange to someone else, however, who might actually possess a sense of humor).
